Ingredients for Success: Spice, Spice, and More Spice
Spontaneity, Praise, Imagination, Creativity, Enthusiasm
To all teachers,
Are you looking for activities to increase your students' interest in learning? Do you want your students to enjoy learning? I have compiled a booklet containing my favorite activities I use in my Academic Skills Advancement English, writing, and study skills courses: Finding the Missing Pieces (listed on Books Published page). Fifty-nine activities are included. If you are interested in just one of these areas, I have posted below the booklets separately: "Challenging the Reluctant Writer," "Getting Down to Business," and "Preparing Students for Success (Study Skills)."
I have presented my materials at numerous workshops throughout the United States and have received many positive responses from teachers who have incorporated these activities successfully. When students enjoy learning, they attend regularly and participate more. As one of my students stated, "I would NEVER miss one of your classes because you always have something exciting each class, and I don't want to miss out." Learning doesn't need to be boring, so try my activities and see if your students' view of learning becomes more positive.
I have presented numerous workshops at conferences, elementary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States to train teachers how to use creativity in their classroom. Comments from participants have been overwhelmingly positive, and many teachers have been using my ideas in their classrooms with great success.
Comments by Conference Chairs:
Jane's presentation was enthusiastically received with over 100 in attendance. We traditionally have a "Back by Popular Demand" category for presentations, and Jane's will be in that area for next year's conference.

Ashland Community College was extremely fortunate to have Jane as a presenter. The evaluations from participants who attended her sessions were remarkable and close to being the best of the entire conference! That is no small feat, considering the quality of the speakers, many nationally recognized. Ivy Tech Community College is very fortunate to have faculty of the caliber of Professor Tichenor. She has been asked to be one of our featured speakers for next year's conference.

Comments by Workshop Participants:
Jane is a gifted teacher who communicates ideas well. Her wealth of information is a boon to me in my work!
Jane's presentation was truly outstanding: lively, stimulating, and inspiring. The central message (in my thinking) was that learning can be fun and that students will learn better in a comfortable but challenging atmosphere.
Throughout the workshop Jane demonstrated various techniques instructors could use in the classroom to promote learning. She provided tools and techniques that can be implemented on a daily basis to help students become better thinkers.
I loved the presentation! Jane reminded me that teaching can be fun. I can't wait to try some of her ideas in class. Thanks for reminding me that teaching is exciting and an adventure.
My philosophy:
I truly believe in Alfred Mercier's quote: "What we learn with pleasure, we never forget." The activities in my booklets will encourage you to use your creativity to add spice to your lessons. You will be pleasantly surprised when your students become more actively involved and attendance improves. You might even hear this comment, "I didn't realize learning could be so exciting," which I have heard from several of my students.

Challenging the Reluctant Writer (English/Writing)
Do your students shake with fear when you give them a writing assignment? Do they lack confidence in their ability to write? Are their grammar skills lacking? This booklet contains 35 activities I have used successfully with my Skills Advancement Writing/English courses. Watching the students' confidence grow has been inspiring. I can sum it all up in the comment of one of my students. When I returned the students' graded essays, she proudly exclaimed, "Hey, I'm not such a bad writer after all!" If you love having fun while you teach, you will enjoy using some (maybe all) of my activities in your classroom. Getting Down to Business (Creative Approach to Teaching)
Preparing students for the workforce should be one of our goals as teachers. To better prepare my students, I decided to teach one of my writing courses as if the students were my employees. The students' response was overwhelmingly positive. They loved the idea of developing their own contract, receiving their assignments in memo form, submitting their work in company folders, and gaining bonuses and rewards for excellent work or useful suggestions. They took more pride in their work, and their self-esteem improved. This approach could be modified to be used in any course. Included in this booklet are the benefits and incentive package, the contract, and all the memos I used throughout the semester. This is Booklet #3 from my booklet "Creative Activities for English, Writing, and Study Skills." You will love being the CEO of your own company!
